GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
200
BAL PRODUCTS: will be applied strictly in accordance with the sitework instructions on the manufacturer's product data sheets. All BAL products are covered with a 10 year guarantee, except cleaning products.
205
MICROBAN®: Microban® antibacterial protection is not a substitute for good hygiene practices. In order to obtain the best possible long term antibacterial protection, it is strongly recommended that the tiled surface is regularly cleaned with BAL-Microshield cleaner incorporating Microban® antibacterial protection from the BAL-Pro-Hygiene Systems range. Microban and the Microban Symbol are trademarks of the Microban Products Company, Huntersville, NC.
210
INSTALLATION: will be carried out by trained operatives only, using safe working methods and where necessary, suitable protective clothing and equipment.
220
SUITABILITY OF BACKGROUNDS/BASES: Before starting work it will be ensured that backgrounds/bases are:
- Sufficiently flat to permit the specified flatness of finished tiling.
- Suitable for tiling in the service conditions to which they will be exposed.
- Sufficiently strong and rigid to support the tile finish.
If any of the above requirements are not met, the Site Supervisor will be informed and
corrective measures agreed.
222
NEW CEMENT:SAND RENDERING: Before commencing tiling, rendering will have been allowed to dry out by exposure to air for at least 2 weeks (3 weeks for swimming pools) or, for rendering based on BAL-QUICKSET CEMENT, 24 hours.
223
NEW GYPSUM PLASTER: Before commencing tiling, plaster will have been allowed to dry out by exposure to air for at least 4 weeks. If the surface to be tiled is dusty, this will be removed by thorough dry brushing after which the surface will be primed using BAL-BOND SBR (diluted 1:4 with clean water), or BAL-PRIME APD (diluted 1:1 with clean water).
280
SAMPLES: Before placing orders representative sample(s) of _ will be submitted. It will be ensured that delivered materials match the sample(s).
290
CONTROL SAMPLE(S): Sample area(s), being part of the finished work in agreed location(s), will be completed and approval of appearance will be obtained before proceeding.
PREPARATIONS
300
EXISTING BACKGROUNDS/BASES GENERALLY: - Any efflorescence, laitance, dirt and other loose material will be removed.
- Any deposits of oil, grease and other materials incompatible with the bedding will be removed.
- All tile, paint and other non porous surfaces will be cleaned down by washing with water containing detergent, then with clean water.
- The background/base will be allowed to dry before fixing tiles.
310
EXISTING CONCRETE/BRICK/BLOCK/RENDER BACKGROUNDS: All loose or hollow portions will be cut out and made good with a 1:3 cement: sand mortar applied over a slurry bonding coat as clause 510.
Gypsum Plaster
330
GYPSUM PLASTER BACKGROUNDS: Excessive towelling of plaster to improve its appearance may result in a dusty or dense polished surface which is not suitable for tiling.
The maximum weight of tiling which can be supported by a dry, sound gypsum plaster finish is 20kg/m², which is equivalent to tiles with a thickness of 8mm.
Last item: This item is included to cover only minor areas of making good. If a substantial amount of making good or re-plastering is needed, it should be specified, this item being deleted.
- It will be ensured that the finish coat has been applied, that the plaster is dry throughout and free from dust, efflorescence and friable material before being tiled. If the plaster surface is dusty, this will be removed by thorough dry brushing and the surface primed using BAL-BOND SBR (diluted 1:4 with clean water), or BAL-PRIME APD (diluted 1:1 with clean water).
- Any defective areas will be cut back, including loose or badly cracked plaster, to straight horizontal and vertical edges. The background and edges will be thoroughly dry brushed and made good with plaster or a suitable non shrinking filler.
Gypsum Plasterboard
340
GYPSUM PLASTERBOARD BACKGROUNDS: It will be ensured that sheets are dry, securely fixed and rigid with no protruding fixings and the face intended to receive the decorative finish is exposed.
Gypsum plasterboard is a suitable background where the weight of tiling does not exceed 32 kg/m² (equivalent to tiles with a thickness of 12.5mm).
The plasterboard should comply with BS 1230: Part 1 and be:
- Type 3 where there will be any exposure to moisture.
- Not less than 12.5mm thick.
- Fixed with screws or nails at 300mm centres both horizontally and vertically to seasoned timber or suitable proprietary framed supports.
- Rigid and free from springiness and surface undulations.
Plasterboard wall linings fixed with plaster dabs or adhesive should be allowed to stand for 10 days before being tiled.
Tile Backer Boards
351
TILE BACKER BOARDS/FIBRE CEMENT SHEETS: It will be ensured that sheets are dry, securely fixed at a maximum of 300mm centres, rigid and that the fixings do not protrude.
Existing Glazed Wall Tiles
390
GLAZED TILE/BRICK BACKGROUNDS: - It will be ensured that the existing tiles are firmly adhered to their bed and that the bed is sufficiently strong to support the weight of new tiling. Loose or hollow sounding tiles will be removed and made good with a 1:3 cement: sand mortar applied over a slurry bonding coat as clause 510 or with a suitable non shrinking filler.
- Defective areas of glazed bricks will be cut out and made good with a 1:3 cement: sand mortar applied over a slurry bonding coat as clause 510.
510
SLURRY BONDING COAT: - For mortar using Portland cement:
- 2 parts Portland cement to BS 12, class 42.5 to 1 part BAL-BOND SBR will be mixed by weight.
- For mortar using BAL-QUICKSET CEMENT:
- 2 parts BAL-QUICKSET CEMENT to 1 part BAL-BOND SBR pre-diluted 1:1 with clean water will be mixed by weight.
- The slurry bonding coat will be brushed on to the background/base immediately before applying the mortar.
FIXING
600
FIXING GENERALLY: - It will be ensured that there are no unintended colour/shade variations within the tiles for use in each area/room.
- Variegated tiles will be thoroughly mixed.
- Tiles will cut neatly and accurately.
- Before the bedding material sets, adjustments will be made to give a true, regular appearance to the tiles and joints when viewed under their final lighting conditions.
- Surplus bedding material will be cleaned from the joints and face of the tiles without disturbing them.
610
ADVERSE WEATHER: - Tiles will not be fixed if the temperature is below 5°C or in damp conditions.
- Frozen materials will not be used nor will adhesives be applied to frozen or frost covered surfaces.
- Tiles will not be fixed if the temperature of the background/base is in excess of 65°C.
- Adequate precautions will be taken to protect work from inclement weather, frost and premature drying out.
620
SETTING OUT GENERALLY: - Joints will be true to line, continuous and without steps.
- Joints on walls will be truly horizontal, vertical and in alignment round corners.
- Joints in floors will be parallel to the main axis of the space or specified features.
- Cut tiles/slabs will be kept to a minimum and will be as large as possible and in unobtrusive locations.
- Joints in walls and floors will be in alignment where practicable.
- Where positions of movement joints are not specified they will be agreed with the Site Supervisor.
- The setting out of _ will be in accordance with drawing(s) _.
622
SETTING OUT MOVEMENT JOINTS (INTERIOR WALLS): - Movement joints in tiling will be provided:
- Over existing and/or structural movement joints.
- At abutments with other surfaces.
- Over junctions between different background materials.
- At internal vertical corners.
- At 3-4.5 m centres horizontally and vertically
- Joints will be at least 6mm wide and extend through the tiles and bedding to the substrate.
- Joints located over structural movement joints will extend through any intermediate substrate and be _ mm wide.
640
FLATNESS OF TILING: Sudden irregularities will not be permitted. When checked with a 2m straightedge with 3mm thick feet at each end, placed anywhere on the surface, the straightedge will not be obstructed by the tiles and no gap will be greater than 6mm.
740
ADHESIVE BEDDING: THIN-BED/SOLID-BED: - A BAL-THIN-BED SOLID-BED TROWEL will be used, or where the background/base is not sufficiently flat to achieve a solid bed of adhesive with this trowel, a BAL-THICK-BED SOLID-BED TROWEL will be used.
- The adhesive will be applied to the dry background/base in areas up to 1m². For porous backgrounds/bases, a skim coat of adhesive will first be applied prior to combing the remaining adhesive while the skim coat is still wet.
- Any depressions (ribbed, keyed profiles, etc.) to the backs of tiles will be filled with adhesive.
- Tiles will be pressed firmly into the adhesive with a twisting/sliding action ensuring that as far as possible no voids are left behind the tiles.
- The use of a BAL Mosaic Trowel should be considered when fixing mosaic tiles.
805
FIXING MOSAIC (WALLS / WORKTOPS): - For paper faced mosaic: Mosaic sheets will be pre-grouted and any surplus will be removed before fixing.
- Mosaic sheets will be placed in position as accurately as possible and tapped down with a wooden beater so that full contact with the adhesive is achieved. The width, plane and alignment of joints between sheets will match the joints between the mosaic tesserae.
- For paper faced mosaic: The paper will be wetted and carefully removed before the adhesive hardens completely. Surplus adhesive and glue will be washed off from the face of the mosaic. Grouting will then be completed.
- The use of a BAL Mosaic Trowel should be considered when fixing mosaic tiles.
880
CHECKING CONTACT AREA: As work proceeds and before the bedding has set, random tiles will be carefully removed to verify that the contact area is as specified. The initial bedding material will be removed and the removed tiles will be buttered with fresh material and re-fixed.
GROUTING / COMPLETION
900
GROUTING: - The bedding material will be allowed to harden sufficiently before grouting.
- It will be ensured that joints are 6mm deep (or the depth of the tile if less), and are free from dust and debris.
- Joints will be completely filled using a rubber grouting squeegee and tooled to an approved profile. The surface will be cleaned off and left free from blemishes.
910
COLOURED GROUT: The potential risk of staining will be checked by applying the grout to a few tiles in a small trial area. If discolouration occurs BAL-PROTECTIVE SEALER will be applied and the trial repeated.
920
SUITABILITY OF MOVEMENT JOINTS: Before commencing, it will be ensured that:
- Joint dimensions are within the limits specified for the sealant.
- Surfaces are smooth and undamaged.
- Preparatory work which should have been done before the assembly of the joint has been carried out.
- The site supervisor will be informed if the joints are not suitable to receive the sealant and proposals for rectification will be submitted.
930
PREPARING MOVEMENT JOINTS: - The surfaces to which the sealant must adhere will be cleaned using methods and materials recommended by the sealant manufacturer.
- All temporary coatings, tapes, loosely adhering material, dust, oil, grease and other contaminants which may affect the bond will be removed.
- Joints will be kept clean and protected from damage until the sealant is applied.
- Backing strip, bond breaker, primer: Types recommended for the purpose by sealant manufacturer.
- Backing strips and/or bond breaker tape will be inserted into the clean joint leaving no gaps. If the adhesive used to fix the tiles was BAL-FLEX or BAL-FASTFLEX, it will be ensured that the backing strip and/or tape prevent contact between the silicone sealants and the adhesive.
- Adjacent surfaces will be covered with masking tape to prevent staining and to protect the surfaces which would be difficult to clean if smeared with primer or sealant.
950
APPLYING SEALANTS: - It will be ensured that the operatives observe the manufacturer's and statutory requirements for storage and safe usage of the sealants.
- Equipment and methods recommended by the sealant manufacturer will be used and applied within the recommended application life of the primer and the sealant, and the recommended air and substrate temperature ranges.
- Sealant will not be applied to damp surfaces (unless permitted otherwise), to surfaces affected by ice or snow or during inclement weather. Joints will not be heated to dry them or to raise their temperature.
- Joints will be filled completely, leaving no gaps, excluding all air and ensuring the firm adhesion of the sealant to the required joint surfaces. The sealant will be tooled to a neat, slightly concave profile unless specified otherwise.
- The sealant will be protected until cured.
960
PROTECTION (GENERAL): All completed areas will be adequately protected and kept clean. Any droppings will be cleaned off immediately.
